Lecture: Saving the North Atlantic Right Whale

May 18, 2016 @ 7:00 pm

Free

Bruce Russell, President of the Havre de Grace Maritime Museum, will present an engaging
discussion and short video about the plight of the Right Whale, of one of the world’s most endangered
marine mammals. The heavily-trafficked shipping lanes at the entrances to the Chesapeake Bay have
been a killing zone: Right Whales do not survive a collision with a ship that is often thousands of tons
more massive than these great leviathans of the sea. Mr. Russell will share his experience as chair of the
advisory committee for the National Marine Fisheries Service, and how he developed a plan to reduce
the so-called “ship strike,” and related efforts to save the entire species from extinction due to fatal
collisions with ships. His presentation includes a short video and pictures (not for the faint of heart!)
and a discussion of the science, the policy implications, the economics, and the politics behind the
programs and regulations developed based on the advisory committee’s recommendations
